Cooking Class

Orleans CHEFS

The Full Story

The CHEFS program offers three class options which are offered in six-to-seven-week cohorts in groups of about twenty students. Each class has a specific theme and content.

Participants are expected to attend all classes or complete a makeup activity to be eligible for participation incentives at the end of the class.

The new CHEFS program will offer three curriculums to accommodate both new and returning participants.

  • CHEFS 101: Nutrition Basics, Build a Healthy Plate

The first curriculum is similar to Stone Soup. Participants will learn how to prepare cost effective meals using the Kitchen Kits provided to participants. Once they have completed the course, they will have the skills and confidence they need to prepare nutritious meals at home. They will also be prepared for the two new CHEFS curricula.

  • CHEFS 102: Healthy for Life

The second curriculum covers Food as medicine and participants will receive a health tracker. Participants in this program will learn about the role of food in managing blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol.

  • CHEFS 103: Master the Kitchen. Cooking Matters

The third curriculum covers practical cooking, and participants will receive a lunch kit. Building on the kitchen skills developed in the first curriculum, participants will learn more sophisticated kitchen skills to allow them to do meal prep and cook more complex dishes.

This program will also continue with the Fresh Food Rx. This allows Orleans County families to receive prescriptions, along with prepaid vouchers, from their primary care provider for fresh local produce. â€‹
